The Effects of Smoling on the Median Nerve Somatosensory Evoked Potential

Abstract
Objects and Methods;
@EN The author conducted a study on 28 healthy male adult volunteers to observe the effects of smoking on somatosensory evoked potential(SEP) Scalp-recorded SEPs of the median nerve on right wrist were measured before, immediately after and
5minutes
after smoking.
@ES Results:
@EN 1) There were no significant changes in all of the latencies(NI, PI, N2, P2, N3) and middle amplitude(N2P2) of the median nerve SEPs.
2) Reduction of the intial amplitude(N1P1) was observed during and immediately after smoking
3) Reduction of the NIPI amplitude was observed in all of the three measurements & one consecutively during smoking, with no significant differences among the three measurements.
4) Significant change of the NIPI amplitude was observed in the first of the three consecutive measurements done immediately after smoking, but to significant changes were observed in the following two measurements.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN 5) The result suggests that the changes caused by smoking on the SEPs is similar to the transient reduction of the cerebral blood flow caused by vasoconstriction, the hypoxia, and/r superimposed hypercapnia.
